Australia punches far above its weight class when it comes to producing construction tech unicorns. With just 2% of the US population and 6% of its GDP, Australia has fostered 2 out of the 17 total global unicorns in the construction tech space. In fact, only the massive markets of the US and India can boast more unicorns in this sector. As Patric notes, "So Australia, 1.6 trillion GDP, US 26 trillion. So that's like 6% of the US economy, right? And yet you have two unicorns in construction tech." This outlier status has been consistent over time rather than a one-off fluke.
Tight-Knit Constru-Tech Community Connects
The construction tech community Down Under is also exceptionally collaborative and interconnected. As Shubhankar observes, "If you find a high quality or let's say even a relatively high quality construction tech founder, it is almost impossible that person would not know all the other high quality construction tech founders in Australia." There is a tight-knit nature to this scene where people operate more as partners than distant competitors. The nation may be geographically isolated, but tight networking helps bridge this vast distance for the entrepreneurs driving innovation in this space locally.
Global Mindset from Inception
With Australia's small domestic market, forward-thinking construction tech founders understand global applicability must be baked into their solutions from day one. As Shubhankar notes, "So this is what I mean as like the founder, sometimes not understanding the dynamic, where I think they sometimes go at it too hard and not understanding that it's a dance." They cannot afford to gradually figure out internationalization after building for Antipodean customers alone. Whether leading sales themselves or letting their products speak for themselves, Australian teams build for global scale in mind from inception.
